As the darkness grows longer and the days grow shorter, we choose to connect and celebrate together. We share who we are and what we love with one another. What does 'planning' look like?

Learning is a shared journey for everyone involved. Through ongoing reflection on children’s play and learning, educators engage in a continuous cycle of co-inquiry—one that deepens each time they revisit it. With every iteration, educators stretch their thinking and expand their understanding of how children make meaning in the world.

Honouring the value of lifelong learning, we walk alongside educators as they develop a stronger understanding of themselves, the children, families, and their co-educators. These relationships shape how educators create responsive environments where children can play, grow, learn, and participate as citizens within their child care community.

We recognize the importance of providing educators with the systems and structures that support their own learning—time to be with one another, time to engage with others in the community, and time to play and be playful themselves. 🌟 Introducing Rising Readers! 🌟

Thornhill Child Care Society is proud to partner with the @rotRotary Club of Calgary North to launch Rising Readers, a new early language and literacy initiative designed to help every child with tools to succeed and thrive in learning environments.

The Rising Readers program provides targeted, evidence-based literacy and language supports for preschool and Kindergarten children who are learning English or are identified as being at risk of reading difficulties. These children often fall outside of traditional funding categories like Program Unit Funding (PUF) or English as an Additional Language (EAL) supports, yet benefit greatly from intentional intervention.

The program focuses on:

🔹 Building oral language and vocabulary through storytelling, songs, and dialogue
🔹 Strengthening early reading and writing skills, including phonological and phonemic awareness
🔹 Offering small-group literacy interventions led by our Literacy Intervention Specialist, certificated teachers, and Early Childhood Educators
🔹 Providing parent learning sessions and take-home literacy supports to help families extend learning beyond the classroom
By fostering collaboration between children, educators, and families, Rising Readers aims to close the literacy gap early — ensuring that every child, regardless of background or ability, develops the confidence and skills to become a lifelong reader.

We made moon cookies (from cooked tapioca flour, food coloring, coconut milk and sugar) which is one of our traditional Vietnamese childhood desserts.

"At its core, the Mid-Autumn Festival is a celebration of the harvest and family unity. Historically, people worshiped the moon to give thanks for the harvest and to pray for its return in the following year. The full moon’s roundness is seen as a representation of completeness, which extends to family togetherness. Today, the festival is still important for families to come together and appreciate the beauty of the full moon, while also praying for good fortune and health."

We often consider the outdoors to be the place to do BIG things, to 'blow off steam' or 'burn energy'. But there is so much value in offering opportunities for quieter moments outside. How can we adapt the things we usually consider 'indoor' activities and bring them outdoors?
