THORNHILL FAMILY DAY HOMES

Behaviour Management Policy

It is the agency’s intent to ensure that any behaviour management technique
will be age appropriate and positive. Please discuss with your provider any
strategies that are effective with your child, as every attempt will be made to
provide consistency while your child is at the day home. Methods must be
consistent with our philosophy.

Prohibited Methods

Discipline will not include any physical punishment, hitting, spanking or shoving.
Discipline will also not include any abusive language, loud and/or aggressive
statements. Embarrassing, ridiculing and mocking a child are also prohibited.

Providers will use a combination of preventative measures and intervention
strategies to manage children’s behaviour. Supervision, program planning and
positive reinforcement help to prevent discipline issues before they begin.

If a problem does occur, providers intervene and redirect the children to a new
toy or activity, offering choices as appropriate. Children are encouraged to
problem-solve and are given age-appropriate strategies to accomplish this.

Limits should be set with the children using logical consequences. Positive
direction and guidelines set by the provider will help the children learn and
understand limits.

"Time away" is used as a last alternative. This time is used when a child would
benefit by calming down, gathering himself or herself, or perhaps just taking a
break from the situation. It is not in any specific "corner", it is an area away
from the others. In the event that there is a reoccurring concern regarding a
child's behavior, it is important that the parent and the provider discuss the possible strategies to help work through the behaviors. Please remember that
the agency is also available to provide suggestions.
